Sequel to the news about 320 Nigerians leaving South Africa yesterday, only 187 people made it back home due to the fact that the South African government brought up new immigration rules to frustrate the evacuation process. The returnees included adults, children and infants, who expressed joy on returning home safely and sang the Nigerian National Anthem.
The Chairman of Nigeria Diaspora Commission, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa told the public that over 600 Nigerians are willing to return home, adding that the government was ready to assist them to settle back in the country through its various social intervention programmes. She also disclosed that the Federal Government is giving N40,000 worth of airtime to the returnees to last them for two months as well as stipend of N10,000 for transport and also Bank of Industry had been mobilised to assist those willing to acquire vocational skills.
Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa confirmed that there was a 15 hours delay before the flight left South Africa. The 187 passengers that were aboard the Air Peace Flight arrived the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, at 9.43pm.
