Its about time we bring you back home and give you the top 10 highest grossing Nollywood movies from 2010-2019.

The Nollywood scene sure did record a great milestone in 2019. This is not far fetched from the quality of movies being produced.  Despite the risks, it is certainly evident that movie makers are putting in so much to register the Nigerian movie scene on the world map.

It is without doubts that there were quite a number of movies which did great numbers in the movie market in terms of revenue generated over the last couple of years. However, Gistcandy only compiled a list of the top ten of them that grossed in high revenues.

No. 10: Your Excellency – ₦164 Million

Funke Akindele debut movie “Your Excellency” makes it to number 10 spot on the top highest grossing Nolloywood movie till 2019. Within its first two days, the movie earned ₦15.7 million.

Chief Olalekan Ajadi is a bumbling billionaire businessman and  a failed presidential candidate, who’s obsessed with Donald Trump. All through the power of social media, a major party finally blesses Ajadi and he becomes a credible contender in the process.

As the political drama unfolds, it seems possible that even the most clumsy candidate who has nothing to offer except for viral soundbites, amusing behavior, and dance moves can be taken as a candidate for the presidential role.

No. 9: Sugar Rush – ₦166 Million

Sugar Rush has grossed over ₦110 million in its first week, after being released a few days before year 2019 ended. It is also the first time that an unknown director (Kayode Kasum) was able to make this happen. Well, we can say due to the film’s stars’ power, he was able to achieve success.

The movie tells the story about the “Sugar Sisters” who stumbled on a whopping sum of $800,000. In not less than 3 days, they spend $150,000 carelessly and  end up victims of their aspirations. The financial crimes commission and the supposed owners of the money come for them but the money is lost.

To save their abducted mother, the girls are given two days to get the money back. They decide to team up with two crime agents to re-steal the money from a wealthy but dangerous man with supernatural powers.

No. 8: 10 Days in Sun City – ₦178 Million

“10 days in Sun City” shooting locations were in Lagos and Sun City in Johannesburg, South Africa and was centered on the adventure series of “Akpos”.

It narrates the story of an aspiring beauty queen who was brought to stardom and in the process paid the price for losing her peace and joy. She denounced her fiancé, who happened to also be her manager.

On the verge of being enslaved by her Godfather, he got a deal from some people he deprived of the benefits in the past. True love does conquer all irrespective of the barriers or challenges encountered.

No. 7: A Trip to Jamaica – ₦181 Million

“A trip to Jamaica” was premiered worldwide on September 25, 2016 in Lagos State. As all the movies are comedy driven, a trip to Jamaica also followed the trend of trying to be funny but ending up a disaster.

Even though it ended up a disaster, it still made it to number 7 on the countdown. This is to say, we actually support a lot of “nonsense” and help them sell.

The film tells a story about the adventures of a newly engaged couple in their relatives residence outside Nigeria, and how the secrets of their host led to the eventual breakup of their union amidst the culture shock of the new country and living with upper-class citizens.

No. 6: Merry Men 2: Another Mission- ₦205 million

“The Merry Men 2: Another Mission is a sequel to “Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons”  has done so much to be on number 6 spot today within the space of a month.

The movie tells us how the four Merry Men have stopped robbing the rich to give to the poor and focus on  their individual businesses.  Ayo  Alesinloye, the charming leader of the pack, prepares to wed EFCD field operative, Dera, the love of his life. Naz prepares to be a father, thrilled that Kemi, his wife and Ayo’s younger sister is pregnant.

The Merry Men is the fifth and most successful movie for Ayo Makun (AY) as a producer.  It had the second best opening weekend for a Nollywood movie which grossed over ₦230 million and landed a cinema release in the United Kingdom.

The movie was centered in Abuja, where four rich men known as “The Merry Men” operate in. They seduce powerful women, steal from the rich, give to the poor, get contracts from the political elite and so much more.

They yet face their biggest challenge when they provoke a notorious and corrupt politician plan to demolish a village to build a shopping mall. The four men scheme to save the poor people of the village. The struggle to keep it all together begins as their loyalty and friendship is being tested.

No. 4: King of Boys – ₦245 Million

King of Boys, a political thriller film directed, written and co-produced by Kemi Adetiba. Also her second directorial debut to gross over 200 million in the Nigerian box office, following the release of “The Wedding Party”.  The movie runs a total of 180 minutes (3 hours).

King of Boys narrates the story of Alhija Eniola Salami, a businesswoman who chases political power. She is a pillar of the society; loved and feared by many and known by a selected few. She eventually loses her stronghold over the underworld to a younger associate, Makanaki and is caught up in a game of trust. This leads to her ruthlessness as the movie goes on.

No. 2: The Wedding Party – 452 Million

Shot in Lagos and Dubai, Wedding party 2 makes it on our number 1 spot grossing a total of  ₦512 million.  The movie racked over ₦20 million on its first day and costed ₦300 million more than its prequel which was ₦100 million, it definitely got the position it currently holds.

Dozie’s (Banky Wellington) elder brother, Nonso (Enyinna Nwigwe), has continued his romance with Deardre (Daniella Down), Dunni’s (Adesua Etomi) bridesmaid. Nonso takes Deardre on a date in Dubai and proposes marriage by accident. After a disastrous traditional engagement ceremony in Lagos, Nonso’s family and Deardre’s aristocratic British family reluctantly agree to a wedding in Dubai.
